These two are the most common refurbished iPhones people weigh against each other, because the prices sit close together and the phones look almost identical. The differences are real, but only three of them change daily life.
The three differences that matter
1. USB-C instead of Lightning
The iPhone 15 charges with the same cable as an iPad, a Mac, a Switch, most Android phones and nearly every new accessory. The iPhone 14 uses Lightning. If everything else you own has moved to USB-C, this alone is worth the gap. If your house is full of Lightning cables, it is worth nothing.
2. The Dynamic Island
The 15 replaces the notch with the pill-shaped Dynamic Island that shows timers, directions and music. It is genuinely useful, and it is also the thing you stop noticing after a week.
3. The main camera
The 15 has a 48MP main sensor against 12MP on the 14. In ordinary daylight photos the difference is modest. Where you see it is cropping — the 15 gives you a usable 2x zoom out of the main sensor, which the 14 cannot do.
What is the same
Both have the same size screen, the same build, comparable battery life, and both are supported by current versions of iOS. Neither is close to the end of its software life. If you are buying to have a phone that works well for the next few years, both qualify.
How to decide
- Buy the 15 if you have already moved to USB-C, or you take a lot of photos and crop them.
- Buy the 14 if the price gap is meaningful to you. It is the same phone in daily use, minus one cable standard.
- Buy the bigger storage instead. If the gap between the two models is close to the gap between 128GB and 256GB, more storage will affect your life more than either difference above.
A note on buying either one used
With phones this recent, condition and battery matter more than the model. A Fair-grade iPhone 15 with a 90% battery will serve you better than an Excellent iPhone 14 at 80%, and often costs less. Check the battery number before the cosmetic grade.
