A two-year-old iPhone typically sells refurbished for around half of what it cost new, while still receiving iOS updates for years. That is the case for buying one. The case against is simpler: you are trusting someone you have never met about a phone you cannot hold. Both are true, which is why the seller matters more than the phone.
What you actually save
Buying a flagship from two generations ago gets you the better screen, the better camera and the better build of a phone that cost $1,000, for the price of a new mid-range phone. You also skip the most wasteful part of a phone's life: manufacturing. Reusing a phone avoids roughly 60kg of CO2 compared with making a new one.
What can go wrong
- A tired battery sold as "good condition" with no number attached.
- Aftermarket parts fitted during a repair and not disclosed — a replacement screen that isn't as bright, or a battery that ages faster.
- A carrier lock discovered when your SIM goes in.
- No recourse. The phone develops a fault in week three and the seller has no warranty, so the loss is yours.
Every one of those is a seller problem, not a refurbished-phone problem.
The four questions that settle it
- What did you test, exactly? A real answer lists parts: screen, battery, cameras, mics, charging port, Face ID or fingerprint, buttons, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular.
- What is the battery health, as a number? Not an adjective.
- Are the replacement parts original? And if not, which parts aren't.
- What happens if it fails in month three? The answer should be a warranty length, not a sentence about how unlikely that is.
